The Job...

You will be the #2 engineer behind a very fast-growing brand, working with our lead developer.  Our growing codebase has been carefully built with attention to readability and scalability (we think you'll be pleased with it).  We value well-designed code and getting things done right, but most importantly, getting them done.  We take both technical debt and deadlines seriously.

You’ll need to be able to insert yourself anywhere needed: frontend, backend, everything in between. You won’t have to deal with a lot of bureaucracy and approvals to get product decisions made. You’ll be sharing an office space with the CEO.

We are investing in new digital experiences all the time, and expanding our offerings within the world of literature. You will be laying the technical foundation for long-term success of the company, while rapidly launching new features and iterations.

As a full-stack dev, you’ll...

Work directly with our CTO, CEO, and Creative Director on implementing new features, consumer facing updates, as well as backend tools for our supply chain and inventory.  

Build solutions for appropriate scalability. You're ok building something "hacky" if it fits the need, but can also identify real issues and create well designed, elegant solutions to hard problems.

Who You Are...

At this point, on the "specialist" vs "generalist" front, you tend to lean a bit generalist.  You have the flexibility to move around the stack, from frontend templating and stylesheets to backend/sysadmin/databases.

An ideal candidate would be familiar with the following technologies in our stack: Linux systems administration, Ansible, Python, Django, PostgreSQL, React, jsx, ES6, Webpack, scss, Boostrap, jquery, css, html. Mobile app experience is a plus; you might be leading the development of one.

Okay, so maybe you aren’t familiar with everything above, but you’re a fast learner with enough experience to pick up new technologies quickly. You are comfortable communicating with everyone. You can handle not only technical conversations with our lead developer, but can turn right around and answer a legal question, jam on a new feature with our CEO, launch a last minute update for the marketing team, or sit down with a warehouse worker and talk about ways to make their life a little easier. Essential

We're looking for an enthusiastic graphic designer with strong design skills and intuition to come in and make an immediate impact. This person will add to our small (but mighty) design team and play a large role in representing our brand visually as a whole.

What You'll Do

  • Design, design, design. You'll work closely with the Creative team to drive the brand through innovative content that will take Literati to the next stage.
  • Work collaboratively with the Creative team and cross-departmentally including Product, Marketing, and Customer Experience.
  • Be a chameleon, jumping from digital to print and back without skipping a beat.
  • Work on ads, social moments, emails, packaging, content creation, direct mail, photoshoots, and everything else.
  • Always advocate for the consumer's needs, and be able to tell our brand story through creative execution.

Who You Are

  • A Designer. You have an eye for living and breathe the brand's aesthetic, color, typography, icons, and use (or non-use) of space. You understand and accept that a brand's identity is king. You can process consumer research and aggregated data on existing content to make better informed decisions on every project thereafter.
  • A Creator. You have increasing knowledge and skills in photography, retouching, editing videos, creating animations, etc.
  • Tool Agnostic. Photoshop? Illustrator? InDesign? The whole Adobe Suite? Sketch? Premiere? Sure you have preferences in order to be efficient, but you care more about what you're making than what you're using to make it.
  • Communicator. You understand the importance of being able to both brainstorm with the wider team as well as articulate your individual design decisions. You’re all about efficiency and are able to work in a fast-paced environment and rely on strong communication skills to keep on task & flag project inconsistencies. You are always accountable for your own tasks but not afraid to ask for help when needed. You are proud of your work but humble in your role. You can take criticism and put it towards to bettering your work while giving constructive feedback that empowers your team.
  • Experienced. You're still learning, we all are, but you have a solid base of knowledge in working with product, marketing in the e-commerce world, and have stepped foot on a photoshoot or two. You're a whiz with shortcuts in Adobe and can knock out different iterations of content for testing purposes, but that doesn't mean you let typos or pixel misalignment slide by.

What You Need

  • Education: BFA, preferably in a design-related or creative field.
  • Experience: 2-4 years of graphic design experience.
  • Demonstrated success delivering branded design and clean aesthetic in a fast-moving environment.
  • Ability to support digital product design.
  • Ability to produce retargeting digital ads.
  • Expertise in creating emails on a daily basis.
  • Experience working on campaigns from start to finish.
  • Experience on photoshoots.
  • Strong knowledge of digital photography and retouching.
  • Refined skills in print to produce marketing collateral, packaging, etc.
  • Strong skills in building brand equity, typography, layout, color, etc.
  • Fluency in Adobe Creative Suite including InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop.

About the Role

You have the soul of a writer. It’s just in your bones, and you’ve been looking for an outlet. You take pride in making anything sing, whether it’s a witty message to a team slack channel, or a deep personal email to a friend who is suffering.

You’ll start by learning the voice and the brand identity of Literati, and from there you will immediately take over messaging to the most important people in the company -- our customers. Chat and email support is where our writing program starts. It encourages rapid thinking and quick turnaround time, and allows our writers to learn the product, the brand, the identity and the voice. The stakes are lower, the satisfaction is higher, and it gets your head in the game. It also builds empathy, which is central to everything we do. 

If you can master messaging to a single customer, we believe you can master messaging to multiple customers, prospective customers, or the world at large. Our staff writers go on to write anything and everything that needs to be written, including book descriptions, book reviews, useful posts for our customers, marketing emails, witty help content, PR pitches, advertising copy, social media posts, long form content, partnership deals, branding documents, job descriptions, comment boards, and even original content for children’s books. 

The opportunity is what you make of it. The position starts as a contract at $15/hour for green writers, looking for an opportunity to prove themselves and grow. This is a training period designed to get people onboard and up and running.  Skilled writers will start an hourly rate commensurate with experience. Literati is a new kind of bookseller. We run a subscription box service focused on solving the specific challenges parents face when finding the best books for their children. We work with top educators and librarians and pour thousands of hours into obsessively researching the best children’s books from around the world. Every month is a brand new production. A new theme, with new original artwork, new extras, and a brand new set of books. The books are returnable, and our warehouse is a dynamic and creative center with new shipments coming in an out, new beautiful artwork and print jobs going on, and color and light everywhere. The warehouse is the heart of the company.

Literati is made up of world-class product people, perfectionistic designers, philosophical hackers, and straight-up hustlers on a mission to build revolutionary excitement in literature. We're looking for full-time "salt of the earth" types to join our warehouse team in Del Valle.

This is a great opportunity to get in at the ground floor of a fast-growing startup. Compensation is hourly, but our top warehouse members receive salary, benefits and stock options.

The Job

You will personally be responsible for delivering the most important aspect of the business -- the product. This means packing boxes to perfection, dealing with incoming shipments from publishers, processing returns from our customers, as well as being able to handle print jobs and inventory management. Computer skills are a must. Social skills are a must.

We deal with pallets and boxes of books, so we need someone who is capable of lifting 50 pounds comfortably. Also, our fulfillment process involves standing for long periods of time to pack the boxes. Additionally, we are constantly printing -- everything including shipping labels, invoices, artwork in full bleed color, envelopes. Having experience with printers and/or solid computer skills is a huge plus.

We consider everyone on our team part of the team, and that means having a positive can-do attitude. We're less concerned about previous warehouse experience and more concerned with attitude, integrity, curiosity, and being a team player.

Requirements

Literati is seeking a Product Marketing Manager.  You’ll be our go-to Marketing expert, driving the development and execution of Literati’s marketing efforts.. everything from campaign development to tactical planning. You consider yourself a Growth Hacker and have multi-channel experience.   You love the strategy piece, but still dig writing copy.

The position requires a deep understanding of online and offline marketing - social media management, copywriting, content creation, paid marketing strategy, email campaigns, and more.  You’re analytical - you have experience crafting campaigns and then measuring and optimizing them for maximum return.  You have experience developing compelling social media content (Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, Quora).   Solid experience with Google Ads.

Essential Functions:

  • Campaign conception, planning, scheduling, coordination, execution and measurement
  • Create,manage, and analyze marketing campaigns and make spend recommendations
  • Develop email marketing strategies that drive, consumer engagement/retention and support brand marketing goals
  • Utilizing the following channels: influencer marketing, affiliate programs, podcast marketing
  • Assists in the management and creation of PPC campaigns including Social Media Advertising and Google Ads

Requirements:

  • BS/BA, preferably in marketing, advertising, or equivalent 
  • 7+ years of digital marketing experience with a track record of driving customer acquisition and revenue growth
  • 3+ years as a people manager
  • Branding/Marketing experiences, preferably DTC (Direct to Consumer) including content development and consumer-acquisition strategy
  • Influencer Marketing experience 
  • Experience with Google Adwords (now Google Ads)
  • Holistic perspective on digital marketing with a strong understanding of how different media channels work together in a campaign

We're seeking a Social Media guru to develop and manage Literati’s voice across all our social channels, including Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, our Blog, and more. You'll build out our social media strategy, focused on creating an engaged community of customers and influencers.   

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and roll out our social media strategy 
  • Create engaging content for all channels
  • Create standards and best practices to ensure content is on-brand and on-message
  • Identify and utilize software and management tools 
  • Monitor, track, and analyze program performance and provide recommendations for improvements 
  • Seek out and develop relationships with media, aligned brands, celebrities, and influencers to promote cross-brand engagement  

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, English, Business, Economics, or a related field or relevant experience
  • Experience managing social media campaigns 
  • 5+ years of driving social media management for a brand
  • 2+ years experience copywriting/writing for the web
  • A strong understanding of key social platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, YouTube, LinkedIn, Google+ and Snapchat)
